The Dubrovnik Cats

POSERS WHO CAN’T BE BOTHERED

One of the first attractions tourists notice in the Old Town are the Dubrovnik cats. Sunbathing on the shop windows, lying on the steps, on guard at the house entrances, they are not disturbed by passers-by or by the curious cameras. Quite large, fat and round, with neat fur, they look at you serene and confident.

The Dubrovnik cats are not timid. Like any diva, they will pose in front of the camera. When they get bored, they will walk away with elegance and dignity. It’s like they know how much of their photos are circulating on social media.

Don’t be afraid of these furry pets. They are not dangerous. Although stray, they are sterilized, and locals take good care of them.

Spoiled by visitors, they do not chase pigeons that fly freely around the city, and they do not wander the gardens in search of food. They learned the craft. You’ll find them strolling and parading across restaurant terraces because they know no one can resist them. They’ll be offended if you offer them a piece of bread, they know they deserve better, and they regularly get fine pieces of meat or fish.

LOOKING FORWARD TO TOURIST VISITORS

Like all the locals, Dubrovnik cats had a hard time during the Covid epidemic. Without public admiration during the lockdown, they survived a rainy winter. Now, when restaurants and cafes are reopened, they can’t wait for visitors to come.

Don’t be scared of them, but don’t try to pet them, either. Let them be.

Look up to them. Find a sunny corner, sit back with a glass of wine in your hand and enjoy. Send your selfies of serene face and happiness in your heart to friends. Let them see how much you appreciate the cats’ life in Dubrovnik. Just don’t let anyone take a photo of you!
